Ingenious Ways to Beat the Heat

Summer is around the corner and many of us are picturing picnics, time on the beach, and lots of sweet iced tea. But, the truth is, we are going to have to face the gnarly side of summer too: the heat. When it gets so hot you’re not sure you can sleep through the night, you’ll need these ingenious ways to beat the heat:

  1. Pick cotton. We know you might like satin and polyester sheets, but keep those for cooler temps. They are designed to trap heat. Instead, pick cotton, a breathable material, for all your summer time bed-clothes.
  2. Get some freezer burn. Not really, of course. What we are suggesting is that you take your sheets off and stick them in the freezer, or fridge, for a couple hours prior to bedtime. Put them in a plastic bag first to keep them from absorbing smells and moisture.
  3. Freeze that hot water bottle. It might do wonders for you in the winter when you’re trying to stay toasty, but now it can be multi-functional. It will become an ice pack that’s bed friendly.
  4. Think smart. If you are without AC, and you’ve got box fans in the windows, point them out so they suck all the hot air away from you. Then switch the direction of your ceiling fans so they pull the hot air up.
  5. Act like an Egyptian. Believe it or not, the Egyptians used to sleep with dampened sheets. We suggest you do this over some kind of mattress protection though. Read this.
  6. Be free. Wear as little as is possible when it comes to bedtime. Make sure whatever you choose to wear is made out of cotton, as that’s the coolest fabric currently available.
  7. Get “back in the day.” Fill a roasting pan with ice and then put it in front of a fan. You’ll be impressed with how cool the air headed your way will feel.
  8. Cross breezes are good. Open a window and position a fan across from it. Of course, you could set up a slew of fans and get the airflow all kinds of boisterous. Learn more.
  9. Try a hammock. You don’t have to be Tarzan to enjoy a hammock. The airflow afforded by this kind of bedroom set up will certainly keep you cool. And we don’t just mean in the temperature department.
